Do something that could never be done before ....

I have personal experience of a case in which five years of 'modernization' cost five times more than the original development and produced negligible enhancement of functionality.

What a terrible waste of time the past couple of years have been instead of concentrating of Business Process Effectiveness ....a function of Quality and Produtivity if you are familiar with Axiomatic Design terminology.

IT departments must change their strategies to an infrastructure 4.0 to support all those end-user needs. Nice article Brain, that's exactly what IT departments have to put on their agenda for the next 6 month. IT departments are profit center not even cost center anymore. They have to offer value add services to their users and have to compete against all other service provider on the market - and that market is a huge one.

Many people have been saying for years that you need to run IT like a business, well guess what? That day is here and if IT isn't careful, they will be obsolete.

I would venture to say that you hit it right on the head - IT didn't manage and set the proper expectations. The executives should have been told how they can use these devices to do one of the following:

1) Do something they could never do before

2) Do something more efficiently than before

3) Save the company money

If you do set the proper expectations and give your IT staff the proper training to support these devices, you're doomed to failure.

While true, this does enables on premise hosting of cloud like services. In large enterprise environments where data loss prevention practices limit the use of any consumer services like Dropbox, this opens the door for our users. Significant advancements to cloud security\compliance are needed for large organizations to be comfortable using public services.

I think the revolutionary point to make here is consumer cloud services (in the form of appliances) can be hosted on premise and Horizon or CloudGateway can be the broker for the end users and devices.

This could solve many challenges our organization faces in meeting user expectations, while protecting IP.

The question is did they have any native mobile apps? Or file syncing? Because if they just had a remote Windows desktop, then....yeah... of course that's no good. Or were they too locked down? Crazy. Just shows that CoIT is not about the devices, it's about the way we work!
